Where in Portugal people settle
The Algarve leads — Lagos, Faro, Tavira and the towns along the south coast — for sun, golf and a big established community. Then Lisbon and the Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) for those wanting a city or a surf town, and Porto and the Douro valley in the north for something greener and cooler. We see retirees, remote workers and families among the moves, and each destination changes the length of the drive through Spain.
The route across the Peninsula
We cross the Channel and drive the length of France to the border near Biarritz, then down through Spain. For the south of Portugal the natural line is across the west of Spain and down — towards Salamanca and into central Portugal for Lisbon, or further south through Seville and across to the Algarve. For Porto and the north it’s a more westerly run through Spain to the border above the Douro. On some moves the Portsmouth–Santander ferry can shorten the French leg; on others it’s more direct to stay overland. It’s a serious drive either way, and we schedule the hours and stops so your belongings arrive in the state they left Hampshire.

Portugal sits in the EU, so since Brexit a household move needs a full inventory and the transit and customs documents for personal effects. How far is a road move from Hampshire to Portugal?
It’s the longest of our four routes — the far south-western corner of Europe. Across the Channel, the length of France, down through Spain and into Portugal. We plan the driving and the stops properly because of that distance, so your things arrive settled rather than shaken.
Could the Portsmouth–Spain ferry help on a Portugal move?
Sometimes. For parts of Portugal, sailing from Portsmouth to northern Spain and driving down can cut out a long stretch of French motorway. For the Algarve and the south it’s often more direct overland. We’ll weigh up the options for your particular destination.
What about customs into Portugal?
Portugal is in the EU, so a household move needs an inventory and the transit and customs paperwork that applies since Brexit. We prepare and file it and keep it with the load. For residency you’ll have your own Portuguese paperwork; we’ll point you to it and handle the shipping side.
