Portsmouth is unlike anywhere else we work. Most of the city sits on Portsea Island, one of the most densely populated patches of ground in the country, and it moves accordingly — street after street of Victorian terraces, permits on almost every kerb, and the sea never more than a mile away. Handling removals in Portsmouth is less about muscle and more about planning the access down to the metre.
The island and its edges
On the island, Southsea’s handsome terraces and mansion flats sit alongside the tighter streets of Fratton, Buckland and Copnor, with Old Portsmouth and the Gunwharf apartments down by the harbour. Come off the island at the top and it opens up — Cosham, Drayton and Farlington, then out to Portchester, Waterlooville, Havant and across the bridge to Hayling Island. The contrast is stark: a fourth-floor Southsea flat with no lift on one job, a Havant semi with a driveway on the next. We plan each on its own terms.
Parking, permits and narrow stairs
The two things that catch people out on the island are parking and staircases. Nearly every street is permit-controlled and there are almost no driveways, so we arrange a permit or a bay suspension ahead of time — on a Southsea terrace there’s rarely a fallback spot round the corner. Inside, the Victorian stairs are steep and the landings small, so the awkward pieces get a plan: dismantled, hoisted, or eased out through a bay window where that’s the sensible route. None of it is a surprise on the day, because we’ve walked it at the survey.
Moving off the island, and abroad
A lot of Portsmouth moves are the classic step up — an island family trading a terrace for a bit more space in Waterlooville or Portchester. We run that constantly, and we know the M275 and the harbour roads well enough to time it around the traffic. And because the continental ferry port is on the doorstep, a fair few Portsmouth moves keep going — across the Channel to France, Italy, Spain or Portugal, by road, with the paperwork handled.

Can you get furniture out of a narrow Southsea terrace?
It’s our bread and butter. The terraces around Southsea and Fratton have tight hallways, steep stairs and small landings, so we plan the tricky pieces — which come apart, which go out through a bay window, which need an extra pair of hands — before the day rather than discovering it on the stairs.
Do you move to and from the mainland suburbs?
Yes. Plenty of island families move up to Cosham, Waterlooville, Havant or Portchester for a bit more space and a driveway, and we do that run constantly. Moves off the island and onto it are a big part of our week.
